(GF1) http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/3398/sensor-cleaning-eclipse-dust-membrane-gf1 Tue, 29 May 2012 05:55:09 +0000 alphaomega 3398@/talks/discussions Hello Vitaly and all the community, I am here to kindly ask you for some advice.

My near three years old GF1 collected some dust on the sensor that I'm not able to blow out with my Giotto blower. I have searched the web for viable solutions (other than sending the camera for service) and learned something about the so called "Wet method" sensor cleaning technique based on Eclipse, swabs and PEC-PADs.

But during my research I have read somewhere that in the Panasonic bodies there is a dust protective membrane (part of the anti dust system) placed over the low pass filter of the sensor, preventing the direct access to the low pass filter surface and I don't know if this is true or not.

I guess that you, by dismantling some panasonic body, looked at the sensor many times and coud give me some advice regarding this issue: do you ever noticed that the exposed sensor is covered by a sort of dust membrane or something else? Because if there is such a membrane I think that it is not possible to directly clean the sensor without damaging the membrane and/or the sensor. And more in general, do you have some experience regarding this issue?

Any comment/suggestion is welcome and will be highly appreciated. Many thanks in advance for the attention.

Ciao :)

Newbie to GH2, what do I need to know? http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/3368/newbie-to-gh2-what-do-i-need-to-know Sat, 26 May 2012 19:05:21 +0000 acuriousman 3368@/talks/discussions Hi all!

At last, I'm going to be getting my hands on an NTSC GH2. It'll be my first DSLR camera I've ever used (Coming from a Kodak Zi8/Flip Video) and I was wondering what I needed to know to get the most out of it. Basic starter stuff as I have no plans to hack it yet. :p

For example, what speed/model SDHC card will I need?

I saw a thread that had different "settings" which can make the video look gorgeous, how do I use these and what would be best for indoor low light shooting? (http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/953/gh2-settings-vault-most-popular-settings-in-one-place/p1)

How do I get the best quality video out of it?

Is the stock lens (14-142mm) worth using at all?

Those are just a few questions. Anything else you guys can tell me would be wonderful. I love this place!

Sony and Panasonic shares http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/3183/sony-and-panasonic-shares Fri, 11 May 2012 19:07:47 +0000 Vitaliy_Kiselev 3183@/talks/discussions Sony and Panasonic shares plunged to their lowest levels in more than three decades on Friday as investors fretted about the future prospects for two of Japan's most iconic firms amid massive losses.

Sony, which reported a record $5.7 billion annual loss Thursday, dived 6.43 percent to 1,135 yen, while Panasonic closed down 1.55 percent at 570 yen shortly before posting a record $9.67 billion annual loss on Friday.

The firms' shares stood at their lowest level since at least 1980, taking into account previous stock splits, according to the online edition of the Nikkei business daily.

GH2 vs HVX200 DVCPro HD http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/3155/gh2-vs-hvx200-dvcpro-hd- Wed, 09 May 2012 09:20:03 +0000 joeevento 3155@/talks/discussions Hi all, I did this test for a comparison of dynamic range and have a margin of error within which I can retrieve details of overexposed or underexposed between GH2 with Flowmotion and HVX200 DVCPRO HD with whom I worked very hard and know enough well its limitations. I state that the GH2 was in "Cinema", which by all and recognized as the worst way for the DR. In the color correction I simply lowered the overall brightness with "YUV Curve" and I am impressed by the ability to retrieve color and detail with the DVCPro HD (note scales) in contrast with the AVCHD GH2 Hack Flowmotion. My question is: if this situation improves with other hacks or quality of 4:2:2 is still unreachable for us?

Good lenses for documentary filmmaking and run & gun shooting http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/3059/good-lenses-for-documentary-filmmaking-and-run-gun-shooting Mon, 30 Apr 2012 06:33:29 +0000 sohus 3059@/talks/discussions I am currently looking for a good lens for documentary filmmaking with the GH2. I love my primes but when you are shooting documentary, it is very inflexible. One way of solving this is adding one or two bodies so you can just change them around but a zoom lens is the best option IMO.

Lenses that qualify are:

FourThirds:

OLYMPUS : ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 12-60mm F2.8-4.0 SWD http://www.four-thirds.org/en/fourthirds/standard.html#i_012-060mm_f028-040_olympus

Panasonic : LEICA D VARIO-ELMARIT 14-50mm F2.8-3.5 ASPH. MEGA O.I.S. http://www.four-thirds.org/en/fourthirds/standard.html#i_014-050mm_f028-035_panasonic

OLYMPUS : ZUIKO DIGITAL 14-54mm F2.8-3.5 II http://www.four-thirds.org/en/fourthirds/standard.html#i_014-054mm_f028-035ii_olympus

MicroFourThirds:

OLYMPUS : M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 12-50mm F3.5-6.3 EZ http://www.four-thirds.org/en/microft/standard.html#i_012-050mm_f035-063_olympus

Panasonic : LUMIX G VARIO HD 14-140mm F4.0-5.8 ASPH. MEGA O.I.S. http://www.four-thirds.org/en/microft/standard.html#i_014-140mm_f040-058_panasonic

I focused on the Olympus/Panasonic lenses for now. I think that the Panasonic : LEICA D VARIO-ELMARIT 14-50mm F2.8-3.5 ASPH. MEGA O.I.S. and OLYMPUS : ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 12-60mm F2.8-4.0 SWD are good candidates. Especially the Olympus has a very long range (24-120mm in 35mm terms) while still offering a F2.8 wide-angle (and constant F/4.0 over entire range). Documentary shooting is about making trade-off and I will always have my primes for really dark situations (Voigt 50mm/.95, SLRMagic 12mm/1.6 and Olympus 45mm/1.8).

Does anyone here own one of the above lenses? Please share your opinions with me. I probably wait until the Panasonic X 12-35mm and 35-100 are announced as they could be good candidates too, although 12-35mm is a more limiting range.

I have to say, the handling was quite easy and I am really looking forward to shoot some more. Only shot in in MF mode.

I used one of driftwoods patches out of the Timebuster 1.3 for timelapse. Videoframerates are at ~30Mbit/s 720p, and to me it looks really nice in the original file. Maybe you like it and you can give me some critics. Cheers

My cinematography showreel (a lot of GH2 stuff in there). http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/2240/my-cinematography-showreel-a-lot-of-gh2-stuff-in-there. Fri, 10 Feb 2012 10:33:30 +0000 Gabel 2240@/talks/discussions I hope I don't get warned for blatant self-advertising, but I just wanted to share my shoowreel here, there's some GH2 stuff in there (some of it hacked, one shot in the HBR mode). Here's a breakdown: First shot, done with HBR mode and Lomo OCT-19 primes 0:26 Driftwood GOP-3 with Nikon AI primes

0:37 HBR with Lomos

0:48 Cbrandin 66mbit with Lomos

0:56 HBR with Lomos

01:02 Cbrandin 66mbit with Lomos

01:03 Driftwood GOP-3 with Nikon AIs

01:11 HBR with Lomos

01:18 Stock AVCHD with Nikon AIs

01:37 Driftwood GOP-3 with Nikon AIs

01:40 Cbrandin 66mbit with Lomos

01:42 HBR with Lomos

01:55 Driftwood GOP-3 with Nikon AIs

02:04 HBR with Lomos

02:14 HBR with Lomos

(sorry for the double spacing, but otherwise it would all just fall behind each other)

This really shows what an amazing camera the GH2 is! Even unhacked it looks amazing (I think what I got with HBR looks the best to me, but that has more to with my work).

There's also some anamorphic stuff in there, done with my generic anamorphic on an AF100 with a Nikon AI 35mm (third shot, you'll recognize the rest)

And if you like, feel free to check in my site or like me on Facebook!

It looks like these two cameras would pair very well with each other. The HPX250 shoots AVC-Intra 100 Mb/s (10-bit 4:2:2) codec onto P2 cards, and I wonder how it would pair with the GH2 footage in terms of, noise, sharpness and colour.

Any thoughts?

Panasonic GH2 - possible to stop all in-camera Noise Reduction? http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/2140/panasonic-gh2-possible-to-stop-all-in-camera-noise-reduction Sun, 29 Jan 2012 17:03:20 +0000 Lyris 2140@/talks/discussions Hello all, Many thanks for your amazing work in unlocking the Panasonic GH2's full potential.

Viewing the hacked footage, the only complaint I have left is that the camera appears to perform some sort of spatial filtering (presumably for NR purposes) in dark areas. The noise in the midtones and brighter areas is fine and high-frequency, and almost film-grain like. However, shadow noise appears to be spatially filtered, with fine details missing. This occurs even with all the NR settings disabled on the camera, and is problematic for doing further NR in post production, especially when underexposed footage needs to be brightened.

Is this something you're aware of? Can it be disabled to give us a "warts and all" image from the camera?

Example (gamma raised to show issue): http://img269.imageshack.us/img269/1715/gh2noise.jpg
