Climbing in our region is growing very rapidly now. We had over 70 kids competing in one of our smaller venues.

If you haven’t tried indoor climbing before you should. There are climbing gyms in almost every major city in the U.S. and even some in the smaller cities. It is a great low impact sport that really challenges the athlete to use their brain’s to figure out the problem as well.

If your kids don’t like team sports then climbing might be right for them. Check out your local gym or let me know if you can’t find one near you and I will try to locate one for you.

Camera Note: I really need a wider angle lens for these types of events. I was going to buy the 12-35mm for my GH4 but I decided to just get the LX100 instead. These venues are very dark so I need as fast a lens as possible. The LX100 with is Optical Power I.S. should be perfect for these types of events.

Everything was shot in Shutter Priority with Auto ISO. Hopefully, Panasonic will add the min shutter speed setting so I can switch to Program Priority with Auto ISO and gain more aperture control.

I up-converted to 1440p for YouTube. Auto Focus for 4K @ 30 FPS just isn’t where it needs to be yet.

This is my latest short film. Shot on a GH3 with Canon EF L Primes (from my 60D days) and a manual aperture adapter (wish the new speedbooster was out earlier, and wish the GH3 had the focus peaking feature like the GH4 does).

I like the Vivid setting in the GH3, the blacks look good after grading. This wasn't aimed as a cinema production, instead TV with a slight filmic quality!

Few things I would of changed, would have lost the massive DOF to one of my interviews. Broke my lens hood on the Canon 100mm f2.8 IS lens and found I had some casting/refraction on certain shots without it.

Does the camera really make a difference? http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/10953/does-the-camera-really-make-a-difference Sat, 02 Aug 2014 09:28:20 +0000 mpgxsvcd 10953@/talks/discussions So we all like to talk about what camera is better and what features are must haves to make are content stand out from all of the rest. However, do we really know what matters and what doesn't? Do we really know how much dynamic range we need? Do we really know if 4K will make a difference?

I recently had a chance to shoot video at the US Youth Sport Climbing Nationals along with several other people. Myself and one of the competitors were just shooting handheld home movie style for our own highlights videos. However, there was a crew there who was hired to shoot the official Highlights video. Since there are so many climbers not much was overlapped between all of our videos.

I used my GH4 mostly but I always had the GH3 running as a backup with a wide angle lens in case I missed something. The other person was using a Canon T5i and the camera crew had full frame Canon cameras with rigs and stabilizers.

It is pretty obvious that the extra time the camera crew put in for editing paid off. The overall editing of their video is what they really get paid for. However, I was really surprised at how different the Canon video looks to the Panasonic video. Even on youtube you can see that the extra bit rate that the original file has shines through. You can also see that the Canon cameras consistently clip the highlights in almost every scene. The GH4 only clips it in the scenes with direct sunlight shining through the windows.

The video in my file was completely ungraded. It is straight out of the camera and just pieced together with the music. I started out shooting 4K @ 30 FPS because I wanted to see if the extra resolution would allow me to do image stabilization in post processing. I quickly realized that while the extra resolution is a plus the slower Auto Focus was a HUGE minus. With these shots the kids are moving constantly and changing direction during falls.

You can see in the T5i video how often the focus goes out and comes back in. You really need good AFF for this type of video. Therefore, I switched to 1080p @ 60 FPS with a 1/120 shutter duration and 1080p @ 96 FPS for slow motion.

I liked the fact that I could do super slow motion with the 96 FPS footage. However, there is a severe resolution drop when using that 1080p mode. In the end I found out that the 1080p @ 60 FPS mode really is the most versatile. It simply never loses focus and it still has significantly more resolution than any of the Canon cameras. It also retains all of the highlights in creative movie mode with the Cinema D setting.

So what do you guys think? Everyone complains about the Panasonic cameras having 13 stops vs. 14 stops, or the lack of All-I for 4K, or the rolling shutter not being fast enough. Does that really matter? Isn't the significant resolution difference and compression artifacts of the Canon cameras a much bigger issue? Yet the professionals still shoot with the Canon cameras and get paid for it.

So what do you like about the videos below and what do you dislike? I for one love the shallow depth of field of the larger sensor cameras. Even the mighty 35-100mm F2.8 doesn't give me the depth of field I would want on the GH4. However, I wouldn't trade that for the lack of resolution.

Videos:

Amateur T5i video. Remember to select 1080p in the youtube player for highest quality.

Amateur GH4 and GH3 video. Mostly 1080p @ 60 FPS, with some 1080p @ 96 FPS, and 4K @ 30 FPS. Remember to select 1440p for highest quality.

Amateur GH4 video. Almost all 1080p @ 60 FPS. Remember to select 1440p in the youtube player for highest quality.

Professional Canon full frame video(I think. Could be APSC as well). Remember to select 1080p in the youtube player for highest quality.

Custom WB with BMCC Speedbooster is a bad idea on GH4 http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/10905/custom-wb-with-bmcc-speedbooster-is-a-bad-idea-on-gh4 Mon, 28 Jul 2014 14:50:51 +0000 0range 10905@/talks/discussions This little bastard...

I now own 3 cameras. The GH2, BMPCC and the GH4. For the Blackmagic I bought the BMCC Speedbooster, so I can use it on the BMPCC and the GH4, if I would buy it any time soon. And I did - today. Excited about the Speedbooster working with my Nikon Glass and getting away with no vignetting in UHD mode (crop factor 2,3 becomes 1,472 like APS-C), I just wanted to give the Custom White Balance a try, since I had to dial in the correct color temperature on the BMPCC, I wanted the luxury back, to have the right settings at the push of a button.

So I was just about to flex my finger and set Custom WB... when I remembered... my GH2 always using the mechanical Shutter, when taking the custom WB. Cause I want to use the GH4 a little longer, I dismounted the BMCC Speedbooster and took the Custom Whitebalance.

Long story is short: Even with activated Electronic Shutter, the GH4 still uses the mechanical Shutter for Custom White Balance and can be damaged with attached BMCC Speedbooster. Since the SB touches the inside of the Shutter Casing and even leaves a mark there due the pressure of the adapter, when it´s attached.

So better stay with the Blackmagic way of dialing in the color temperature or use your MFT Kit Lens - if you own one - to do the work.

By the way.... am I the only one who sets custom WB? Cause I didn´t read about this issue anywhere else. At least the BMCC Speedbooster Users don´t care much about it and stick with automatic WB ;-)

That´s it for today!

Cheers from Austria! Stefan

For video: GX7 vs A6000 http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/10848/for-video-gx7-vs-a6000 Sun, 20 Jul 2014 22:30:38 +0000 Manu4Vendetta 10848@/talks/discussions we all know that Sony is actually the best manufacturer of sensors and has done wonderful work with the A6000 which provides a number of options that make it almost unbeatable in its price range, only the inclusion of a clean HDMI video output makes it a serious camera.

On paper the specifications and level of A6000 seems better. However in my experience with the NEX-5N even consider Sony in color reproduction is some steps below respect to M4/3 (in FF is another story), the A6000 has greatly improved with colors, but I dont have seen a video that me is convincing in paragraph colorful as offering GX7, which seems a kind of mini GH4, si I do not understand that the manufacturer block the HDMI output when recording video.

If you were to stay with one camera between these two, with which you stay?

GH2 feature film http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/10748/gh2-feature-film Tue, 08 Jul 2014 10:51:51 +0000 mangotree72 10748@/talks/discussions Hi everybody - I just wanted to show you a trailer from our feature film shot on the GH2 - I used mainly an olympus 50mm. It is a very low budget movie, but comes in at 82 mins. I used the same patch as Musgo - I threw this trailer together and added the Musgo trailer music for fun. We're having some music written for the trailer so I can officially release it.

It took three weeks and some weekends to make - I know there are better examples of cinematography and imagery - but I love using the GH2 and was more than happy to use it for the film. Where it will go and end up - I don't know. Just glad I saw it through.

I'm not asking for shares or anything - just wanted to show that we used a GH2 and it never let me down.

Cheers.

Panasonic DMW-MS2 Shotgun Condenser Microphone http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/5440/panasonic-dmw-ms2-shotgun-condenser-microphone Mon, 10 Dec 2012 13:29:32 +0000 driftwood 5440@/talks/discussions The MS2 is Panasonic's all new flagship 'GH3' shotgun condenser microphone.

The mic sports the required 3.5mm jack cable, mic holder, cable holder, lock ring, tripod/hot shoe mount, mini plug 2m cable extender, windjammer and case. Its very easy to put together and you'll be up and shooting within minutes. After mounting and plugging in the 3.5mm jack the unit is powered once you switch on the GH3.

Use the audio mic menus on the GH3 to switch between the following setups:-

  • [Shotgun] Allows recording from one direction by shutting out background and surrounding noise.

  • [Stereo] Allows normal stereo recording over a wide area.

The windjammer can be fitted to the MS2 to knock out unwanted wind noise and very effective it is too. You can further reduce noise by selecting [Wind Cut] on the GH3. Mount the microphone either on top of the camera with the supplied hot shoe (which Panasonic believe is designed to sit at the best height for run and gun! - around 2 inches off the top of camera) or use the extension cable and mount it to a tripod of its own.

Be careful not to use the the GH3's in-built flash when the mic is attached to the top of the camera - don't want any nasty surprises!

Please find attached images of the mic and the response charts to the GH3 in-built settings.

Summary: A very capable little condenser mic that is pretty accurate in both shotgun mode - knocking out surrounding sounds in the stereo field whilst concentrating on the cameras direct line of sight. Its also offers a much better recording of the full stereo field in Stereo mode against the internal mic of the GH3. But let you be the judge - watch a test video on vimeo here (pretty much most of the sound is unedited straight from the MS2);-

The only drawback is probably price - for the same amount (£280 in the UK) - one can buy a Zoom or second hand Rode etc...

CP+ Camera Panasonic interview http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/2275/cp-camera-panasonic-interview Tue, 14 Feb 2012 10:53:44 +0000 Vitaliy_Kiselev 2275@/talks/discussions I want Panasonic to be known for very high-quality cameras, and we are currently restructuring the range of products that we offer to include a very high end model

Panasonic has already shown two new concept lenses that it plans to launch this year – a 35-100mm and a 12-35mm, both of which will feature a constant f/2.8 aperture across the zoom range. 'We are very good at making aspherical lenses,' Kitao told AP. 'And when we use them in our optical designs we can reduce the number of elements we need, and thus produce better optical quality.

the company is able to produce aspheric elements of up to 30mm in diameter, but that soon it will be possible for the factory to produce larger - paving the way for faster apertures.

The GF series is a step-up from compact cameras, but we want the GH and GX cameras to be seen as quality products.

We will define more clearly what GH and GX means this year, so consumers have a better idea of what their characteristics are

We are also trying to improve the readout speed of our sensors and the speed at which the focus information is processed so that lack of sharpness is detected more quickly and focus can be found in less time. We are convinced that contrast detection is a better method for mirrorless systems

We already have lenses from 14mm to 300mm, and we've already introduced nine camera bodies, but now we will make faster lenses and more compact pancakes.
