GH4 Memory Cards. What works and what doesn’t? http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/10276/gh4-memory-cards.-what-works-and-what-doesnt Tue, 29 Apr 2014 12:22:28 +0000 mpgxsvcd 10276@/talks/discussions I have a GH4 and the following 7 memory cards. Listed in order of their theoretical speed. Some of these cards have failed with the “Motion Recording was cancelled due to the writing speed of the memory card” error message in the GH4 and some have not. If they failed then it was always in the stills mode while recording 1080p @ 60 FPS 200 mb/sec ALL-I video.

These cards all failed at some point

  1. Eye-Fi 8 GB Class 6
  2. Eye-Fi 16 GB Class 10
  3. Transcend 32 GB Class 10
  4. SanDisk 8GB Extreme SDHC 30 MB/sec Class 10
  5. Transcend 64 GB SDXC UHS-I Class 3(Gold Plated Label)

These cards have never failed despite my best efforts to make them fail

  1. Transcend 32 GB SDHC UHS-I Class 1
  2. PNY 64 GB 90 MB/sec UHS-I Class 1

Please post your experiences with different memory cards and the GH4. Please only comment if you have the GH4 and have tried the memory card with it. No comments like “This memory card is better so it must work”. Just actual tests that you have performed yourself.

What is the largest sd card a hacked gh2 will support? http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/14264/what-is-the-largest-sd-card-a-hacked-gh2-will-support Tue, 22 Dec 2015 23:50:32 +0000 cayblood 14264@/talks/discussions I just bought a used GH2 on ebay and am interested in using it to record long talks at conferences--events that could potentially run all day. Ideally I'd like to find a reasonable quality setting that would allow me to save 8 hrs or more worth of 1080p footage without having to switch cards. First of all, what is the largest sd card that the camera will support? Are there specific card models anyone would recommend that will be sure to work? Also, any recommendations on which firmware hack to install on my GH2? I'm new to this.

Suggestion for Memory Card FAQ/topic thread http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/9831/suggestion-for-memory-card-faqtopic-thread Mon, 10 Mar 2014 11:04:51 +0000 Brian_Siano 9831@/talks/discussions I'm shopping for new memory cards, and getting good info as to which cards work with what patches (and span) has been difficult. One has to sort through several threads and weigh different reports. And with new cards coming, such as the Sony SDXCs and the newer cards for the 4K cameras, it'd be a big help to pull this info together.

Could we get a dedicated thread, or formal FAQ, going about this? A list of cards, their read/write speeds and general reliability? Names of patches and which cards they work with?

For example: "Sandisk Extreme Pro 32gb: Form: SDHC Read: 95mbps Write: 90mbps Spans with: basic firmware, Cake 2.3 ( both 24fps and HBR modes) Does NOT span with: MoonT7, quantum v9 Known Issues:

How to upload my camera shoots successfully without formatting? http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/8186/how-to-upload-my-camera-shoots-successfully-without-formatting- Sat, 21 Sep 2013 21:30:17 +0000 Cory46463 8186@/talks/discussions Hi guys, Recently, I did some shoots with my Canon camera. However, as I attempted to upload all these shoots to my computer, I was always warned and asked to format it at first. I have used this camera many times and never encountered these similar problems before. Do you know what is going on there? Do you know how to upload my shoots successfully? Should I have to format this camera at first? Help me, please!

The supplier has sent the SDXC UHS-I 80 mb/s. Does anyone know if this will span, I don't want to open it and find it doesn't and find they won't refund because it's opened. ??? Thank you.

Sandisk Extreme Pro Vs. Transcend Class 10 UHS http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/7416/sandisk-extreme-pro-vs.-transcend-class-10-uhs- Wed, 03 Jul 2013 00:08:38 +0000 ir0nma1den 7416@/talks/discussions I couldn't find anyone talking about this Transcend card: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00AFTV3FC/

It's half the price of of the Sandisk, and reviews are saying it's writing around 40-45MB/s, that should be good enough for the most intensive patches.

Why SD controllers are slow in most pre-2012 cameras http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/7415/why-sd-controllers-are-slow-in-most-pre-2012-cameras Tue, 02 Jul 2013 17:20:30 +0000 driftwood 7415@/talks/discussions Ever wondered why the SD card of the 5DMKIII is much slower than the CF card speeds even though the SD card is advertised at faster writes than the camera can perform? This article (which may have already been referenced in p-v) is here for those to read.

Faster FAT32 write speed using new formatter? http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/5865/faster-fat32-write-speed-using-new-formatter Tue, 22 Jan 2013 05:58:27 +0000 _gl 5865@/talks/discussions I just heard about this utility that formats FAT32 devices (like memory cards) with a better alignment - it's supposed increase write speed: http://reboot.pro/topic/16783-rmprepusb-faster-fat32-access-test-version/ I have no time to test this now, maybe someone wants to check it out.

People are reporting write increases of ~20%, but this is tested on a PC and maybe that won't translate to cameras. Worth comparing with their in-built formatting though, might help with marginal card/hack combinations.

Desktop PC http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/2147/desktop-pc- Mon, 30 Jan 2012 16:56:40 +0000 Diffusion33 2147@/talks/discussions Hi everyone,

My mac laptop has finally given up and it is time to upgrade. Since i'm doing a lot of music, photography and now video since acquiring a GH2 in january (which is giving me great joy), i'm considering splashing out on a dell XPS 8300 Desktop going all out Max memory, max graphics and a raid hard drive....

Has anyone got any suggestions apart from this beast would be greatly appreciated. Please no mac chat! i have been burnt. I must say their customer service was great but the machine itself was not up to the job and kept breaking down at the most critical of times making me look like an ass loosing me good gigs.

I currently have a decent enough samsung screen but i will be upgrading to a 32inch LED screen in a few months for video work and pleasure.

Thanks

Reading images from an unformatted memory card (gh2) http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/1891/reading-images-from-an-unformatted-memory-card-gh2 Sat, 31 Dec 2011 20:58:39 +0000 SuperRoach 1891@/talks/discussions
While I was camping I got some nice footage and pictures with a 64gig (one of the SDXC ones for future) sd card in a Panasonic GH2.

I'll admit I was a bit stupid in just putting the memory card in, and snapping photos.

Currently the camera is reading the videos and images taken fine, so there would be no damage.

However plugging it into a Windows 7 based machine brings up a forced "please format this card" message. Is there an alternative way to mount it, or otherwise read the data before I properly format it?]]>
