LX7 or GF6 + 14mm for video? http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/10273/lx7-or-gf6-14mm-for-video Tue, 29 Apr 2014 00:31:00 +0000 stereotype 10273@/talks/discussions Planning to get either an LX7 or a GF6 to use as a compact to always have with me, 25p video being my main use. Already own a GH3, looking for something lighter and cheaper so I can take anywhere without much worry, throw in the back seat of the car, film the kids at the beach, etc...

The two cameras are similar in size, and also more or less in price (after selling the GF6 kit lens). Also intend to be using an ND filter with either to help get the correct exposure for aimed frame rates. If getting the GF6, I'd be using the 14mm + ND both of which I already own (until I get hold of a Sigma 30mm DN to replace the 14mm, same filter size).

At 1080/25p, both seem to cap the video at 20Mbps, but not sure if the compression efficiency is similar?

Does anyone have any practical experience with these, mainly with regards to video quality?

Do they both have adjustable color modes for video like the GH3? Vivid, natural, etc? Can you tone saturation down, etc?

How nice is the LX7 lens? And how does one attach a filter to it? Do you just unscrew the lens cover, and that's it? Or do you need some sort of adapter? I've googled and youtubed, but still a bit confused about how to use those 37mm filters on the LX7...

I've compiled the following "pluses" for each of them:

  • LX7: Internal ND filter, slightly more pocketable, fast lens, slow-mo@100pfs.
  • GF6: Adjustable LCD, bigger sensor, changeable lens.

Any inputs? Which one you'd rather get?

Thanks!

Waterbirds of Lake Wissota http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/10167/waterbirds-of-lake-wissota Mon, 14 Apr 2014 23:22:16 +0000 ragnar 10167@/talks/discussions
5min video of some waterbirds found on Lake Wissota, Wisconsin. where I live. Most of these were on their way through headed towards their migratory summer grounds in Canada. Shot on a GH2 using mpgxsvcd's high quality no adverse effects 42 mb/sec hack, except for the very last clip which was shot using the LX7. As for the bald eagles at the end, while they are not actually waterbirds, they spend most of their time near the water, so that's why I included them.

GH2 is $649, so should I get that one or the G5 or LX7? http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/5885/gh2-is-649-so-should-i-get-that-one-or-the-g5-or-lx7 Wed, 23 Jan 2013 22:39:35 +0000 Fenomen 5885@/talks/discussions Okay, so Lumix GH2 is now only $649 at B&H, half the price of a GH3 (not that you can easily find a GH3 at $1,300 anywhere, mind you). After reading a litany of small but pesky issues with the GH3, I decided to pass on it. So, I could get a time proven GH2 now for only $649 w/o any of the GH3's known issues, or else get the new G5. Not sure if the G5 has same quality hacks for video as the GH2 does? There is also an Lumix LX7, there must be a list someplace that shows all the camera makes and models for which we can find a firmware here, right?

Also, where to see a list of presently available firmwares for either camera, and how can one decide which one to use? Is there like a "10 best" list someplace? Thanks a bunch, ladies & gents.
