So i've been reading about image sensors (much of it is way over my head) but I'm doing my best to learn and I'm curious about foveon x3 image sensors or at least the concept with regard to video. From what I've read (and much of that is written by foveon or sigma itself so it's hard to know for sure) this sensor or technology seems like it might provide some real benefits. They "say" that it records more color information than regular sensors that don't utilize their stacked pixel sensors as it captures light at different wavelenghts with the use of different layers of silicon within the sensor itself and thereby captures "full color" at each pixel location. This all sounds really good to me but I've looked and haven't really seen any extremely positive reviews of either the sensor or cameras using the sensors. My main question is whether this sensor or concept might make a ripple in video imaging technology or if there are limitations that keep this from being a serious option for sensors in video.

GH5 image app connectivity question http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/23318/gh5-image-app-connectivity-question Thu, 02 Jan 2020 09:53:48 +0000 AKED 23318@/talks/discussions I have a slight problem with the connection of the GH5 to the Image app. Up to a year ago, I could start the whole procedure from the iphone,(for example we were driving home after a shooting, the camera in the bag in the trunk) i.e. waking the GH5 up, connecting with Wifi and then transfer pictures from the GH5 to the Iphone. Since about a year this is not possible any more. I have to switch the GH5 on go to replay mode and press the Wifi button on top. Only then I can go to the Iphone, connect the Wifi and then it all works.

Any suggestions what to do to to be able to do it all from the Iphone again without touching the GH5?

You could convert a normal camera direct output.

Clear Image Zoom - Horrible quality http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/17561/clear-image-zoom-horrible-quality Sat, 19 Aug 2017 00:48:18 +0000 hampuslager 17561@/talks/discussions Hi all

was testing out the clear image zoom on the a6500 to reduce RS for some handheld but felt the quality was off.

So I did a comparison, static wide with the Sigma 30mm f1,4 and the Sony 16mm f2.8 with 2x CIZ. Both at f5,6, shot in 4k.

And the later was indeed awful, see attached snaps (SOOC). Top is 16mm+CIZ, second is 30mm.

This is not even close to the good results I've seen of others' tests online. Any setting I need to change?

Problem with FCP 7 since OSX "El Capitan" http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/14243/problem-with-fcp-7-since-osx-el-capitan Fri, 18 Dec 2015 12:34:48 +0000 gabilourson 14243@/talks/discussions hi btw, I have a quick question for all who like me still use Final Cut 7 (yes I know, many of you get on Premiere or FCP X but I'm an old hand, do not blame me!)

Here is my problem: since I switched to OSX "El Capitan" on my mac pro, my Final Cut Pro displays the rushes in a very dark way, as if there was a gamma adjustment problem. I tried to play with the settings of parameters in every way and I have not found a solution.

At best, the problem appears when the playback bar on the timeline is stopped. And as soon as I put in reading, the image appears as normal.

Any idea ? best regards

GH4 - Peaking focus when using ipad and image app software http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/12240/gh4-peaking-focus-when-using-ipad-and-image-app-software Sun, 25 Jan 2015 15:31:07 +0000 jimrobin 12240@/talks/discussions Hello, was wondering if anyone else has had an issue where when using the wifi app on an ipad - focus peaking works, but as sonn as the camera is set into record ( video ) the focus peaking disappears on the ipad. I am able to change the manual focus while record but can't see any peaking. The camera lcd does show it. Is this a software glitch or is it something I have set wrong? I just purchased the GH4 and tested it at a family wedding I attended yesterday. My plan was to set-up the shot and connect the ipad and just sit in the audience with my wife. The shot was including the bride and groom and the minister in 4k. As each spoke I wanted to change the focus slightly to bring each into focus as the minister was a few feet further from the camera. In post I could drop the footage into a 1080 project and pan or enter closer shots through cropping etc. Once the ceremony started I quickly reallized that manually focusing from the ipad without peaking was close to impossible. lesson Learned.

Chips and Scratches on Lens Glass & Its Real Effects on Image Quality http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/9728/chips-and-scratches-on-lens-glass-its-real-effects-on-image-quality Thu, 27 Feb 2014 15:17:50 +0000 fosterchen 9728@/talks/discussions Everybody wants to keep their lens glass in top shape right?
But what is the real world effects of having scratches and chips in the glass? Does it really show up in the image or is it merely cosmetic? I'm sure there is some psychological reasoning to wanting to have immaculate glass all the time, and having such scratches and even chips would rub most of us the wrong way, hence wanting to sell and replace the lens altogether.

I just bought a really nice lens for a very good price due to the fact it has a few chips and scratches on the front glass.
However, the seller states it has no effect on the image quality.
So I received the lens (a Canon FD 85mm F1.2 L), and initial tests do not show any signs of the chips or scratches, which is a win for me.

Does focal range matter concerning if the chip or scratch will show up in the image? I'm sure for macro lenses it would affect, but telephoto lenses might be more forgiving.

Anyone's thoughts and experiences in using chipped or scratched lenses, please provide!

Shootout between Sony A65 vs GH2 http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/1789/shootout-between-sony-a65-vs-gh2 Mon, 19 Dec 2011 19:53:36 +0000 EOSHD 1789@/talks/discussions
Essentially the Sony A65 is the same for image quality in video mode as the NEX 7 and A77. It has a superior sensor to the GH2 but doesn't do a very good job scaling and codec wise - so the GH2 resolves a cleaner looking image with more detail and less aliasing and moire.

However where I feel the A65 wins is...

- CHEAP!! £699 in the UK compared to £1300 for the A77, but same great OLED viewfinder, same sensor, same image processor, 95% of the same features but a plastic body
- Internal stabilisation - Your cheap £50 300mm Minolta becomes as good as an OIS Canon lens. Your £100 fast 50mm F1.8 gets stabilisation for free. Not bad!!
- Handling. I prefer the bigger body to the NEX 5N really
- 1080/50p and 25p in PAL land
- MF peaking, great EVF and 920k LCD

I am also going to be testing a Nikon J1 soon. I feel this is prime for a good hacking Sir @Vitaliy_Kiselev. The sensor may be on the small side but Expeed 3 does a great job of scaling the image... nice clean, sharp resolution and a pretty fast LSI considering the price point. Maybe if the firmware is not encrypted it could be your next conquest :) If you want a body say so and I will whip round for donations on EOSHD for a J1 body to be sent.]]>
WOLLENSAK Vintage lenses, for GH2 http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/7596/wollensak-vintage-lenses-for-gh2 Thu, 25 Jul 2013 05:36:09 +0000 club_irate 7596@/talks/discussions I want to know what is the difference between a WOLLENSAK CINE RAPTAR 17MM F 2.7 and CINE RAPTAR WOLLENSAK 17MM F/2.5 LENS except the aperture and price. Is it a good wide angle lens option on a GH2? the 2.7 is around 80$ and the other over 200$! will a regular C to M4/3 mount work well with this? (i dont want vignettes).

Also, my budget for a good wide is around 200$. if anyone can suggest me a better vintage/new/used lens i would be thankful.

Thanks!

I need some help choosing between the Leica 14-50 F3.8-5.6 and the Panasonic 14-45 (not the pancake lens). I already have the Leica lens and am thinking to sell it to buy the 14-45 for quieter operation but I am wondering if the 14-45 will produce a lesser quality footage than the 14-50. The IOS is noisy but my main question for this thread is the actual difference in image quality between the 2 lenses

If any of you have any experience using both of these lenses I would really appreciate feedback

Thanks

Can the GH3 replace a Traditional Video camera for Amateur work? http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/6331/can-the-gh3-replace-a-traditional-video-camera-for-amateur-work Tue, 05 Mar 2013 11:16:18 +0000 mpgxsvcd 6331@/talks/discussions I have been shooting indoor climbing competitions for years with Micro Four Thirds cameras(GF1, GH2, and now the GH3). I don’t shoot professionally. I simply record the event and share the videos with anyone who wants to see them.

I thought the videos were good in the past. However, the lack of image stabilization, accurate Continuous Auto Focus, and a good wide aperture zoom lens were always mentioned as limitations with my videos.

Finally with the GH3 I think we are over that hurdle. The video below was shot entirely hand held(No tripod or monopod at all) by 1 person in continuous Auto Focus mode with the 35-100mm F2.8 lens. I also only used one battery and still had some juice left after more than 4 hours of filming.

I would say that the focus was spot on for pretty much every clip. Even the focus pull at the beginning from the guy’s Ipad to his son climbing worked perfectly. That was a one take shot. If I didn’t get it right I couldn’t ask the guy and the climber to go back and do it again.

I simply slid my finger from the Ipad to the climber on the camera’s LCD screen. I think it gave the video a very nice effect.

I had other lenses with me like the 25mm F1.4 and the 14mm F2.5. However, I never felt like I needed them. At F2.8 I was almost never above ISO 3200 even with the darker lighting they used for this round.

I think the IS was terrific in the 35-100mm lens as well. Yes I would rather have had the OMD’s 5 axis stabilization. However, I think this is the next best thing. Try holding a camera up for 4 hours straight with a 200mm 35mm equivalent focal length and see how shaky it is without good IS. I also like to take images while I record video and instantly upload them to the web so that spectators can follow along with the action with real-time pictures. With the GH3 I put it in the real time wireless upload mode and shot at 1080p @ 60 FPS in the stills mode. That way I could take stills during video and instantly upload them.

The only issue I had with that is that every time you press the shutter button to take a still it will initiate a focus adjustment. That actually made the focus go off more times than not. After noticing this I just decided to save images directly from the videos in playback mode(Press pause during video playback and then save an image). The camera will upload those images in real time as well.

I have tested the quality of images recorded during video recording and images saved during playback and they are indistinguishable in my opinion.

I also mount my GoPro 3 Black on top of the GH3 and shoot simultaneous wide angle 720p @ 120 FPS video. However, I scrapped all of the GoPro footage because it simply was not up to the caliber of the GH3 video. It is great for super slow motion but the 120 FPS mode indoors produces so much noise that it would not mesh well with the excellent video from the GH3.

I also was impressed with how well the youtube encoding turned out. I normally post to Vimeo as well because it is better for compression. However, in this case I thought the 1080p youtube encode looked great.

I didn’t alter the video at all. I did not do any color grading or post processing on it. I shot in scenery mode with -2 Contrast, +2 sharpness, Zero Color, and -5 Noise Reduction and simply pieced the videos together with a cheap($50) program called AVS Video Editor.

It was really nice to be able to produce the video with the footage as it was shot in camera and still get what I thought was a decent result.

There were plenty of other professional film crews there with much more sophisticated equipment. The little 11 year old girl in the last clip is probably the 2nd best female climber in the country(At 12 years old) and she has a film crew that follows her around everywhere she goes. I wonder how much better their footage looks?

So what do you think? Is the GH3 finally the camera that would make you put down the traditional video camera if you shoot both stills and video?

Google's Image Search: Re-Design Hurts Desktop Users and Puts Critical Functionality on Vacation http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/5200/googles-image-search-re-design-hurts-desktop-users-and-puts-critical-functionality-on-vacation Wed, 14 Nov 2012 19:05:29 +0000 thepalalias 5200@/talks/discussions If you've used Google Image Search in the last year, you've probably gotten used to having a lot of options available to you on the left. Options you could get to quickly and easily, like being able to specify images large than a given size.

But a week ago, Google decided to launch a re-designed interface that hid most options, required more clicks, and move them to the top where they could only be used with an animated reveal (that you had to wait for) in order to make the desktop based image search more consistent with mobile use.

Worse still, the have "temporarily" removed the ability to specific "larger than" or "exact size" image options when searching. Now you can only specify three vague categories of size at best, and even that takes several clicks!

Over a 170 people have posted complaints in the last week in the official Google group at https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!msg/websearch/xcv50_kJ9Pc/ApEqKbCI8u4J but it may take a lot more for Google to get the idea people do NOT like having functionality randomly removed for no apparent reason and that desktop users do NOT like having their functionality impacted just to make things "consistent" with mobile users.

If you have Twitter or Facebook and agree, please share this post. https://twitter.com/PerLichtman/status/268864289429929984

If you want to let Google know directly, please post to the official thread. https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!msg/websearch/xcv50_kJ9Pc/ApEqKbCI8u4J

We couldn't stop Panasonic from ditching an MAR sensor, but this IS something we can do something about. Google has changed similar things in the past in response to public outcry.

The disk image can not be opened. The operating system displays the following warning when attempting to open it: "The disk image you are opening may be damaged and could damage your system. No mountable file systems. Are you sure you want to open this disk image?" The options are, Open, Don't open. Of course I haven't opened it.

This is the first time this happened to me. I have tried Disk Utility to fix it without success. Has someone had a similar experience or have a recommended application to fix the disk image?

Edit: Price Drop $399

Hi - I'm selling my Panasonic 14-140mm Lens. It really is in perfect condition. I bought it new about 6 months ago and have used it maybe 5 times because I've been using only LOMO lenses since I got my GH2. It's basically been sitting in it's pouch inside the Panasonic box for 6 months. It comes with everything it came with when purchased new - Panasonic box, papers, front and rear lens cap, lens shade.

Great zoom range from very wide (14mm) to zoomed in very far (140mm). Lens has Optical Image Stabilization.

Price is $399 and includes free shipping if in US.

It seems like the lens moves because of the torque applied to it, causing the image to move. I got a gini FF, some nikon & yashica lenses, but the problem appears with every lenses... Just to be clear I'm not speaking about "breathing" but some kind of unwanted movement from the lens while focusing. Is there a solution or is it a well-know issue with still lenses ?

Which tripod to get for my needs? http://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/812/which-tripod-to-get-for-my-needs Tue, 30 Aug 2011 13:19:53 +0000 Gabel 812@/talks/discussions I'm somebody who shoots mostly tripod-mounted and a good tripod is very important for me.

The rig I'm using is a GH2, with old Nikon AI-primes, a TrusMT follow focus and matte-box and a SmallHD DP4, all mounted to a Gini Rig with just the rods (I remove the shoulder pad and handles when on sticks I should add).
This is my base rig. I need a tripod that is good and will handle this. However, I want some future proofing too. Right now, I rarely shoot with a barebones kit and if I do, it's never any jobs, so my demands for this is smaller.
But as I'm shelling out a bit on it, I don't want something that I'll have to get rid of once I upgrade my camera. It won't need to handle a RED or an Alexa, but I'd like something that at the most could take an F3 with Compact Primes, using the same setup for the rig.

I'm also adding a Kessler Crane KC8 crane. So I will be mounting the head on top it.
I live in Sweden and will order from the UK or Germany (if you find any of these cheaper, let me know!)

My alternatives:
E-Image 7083
(£525)
http://www.proav.co.uk/E-image-EI-7083-AA-Video-Tripod-Kit/p26789.aspx
Pros: The cheapest of them all, 100mm, the legs can take a crane. Handles the most weight (13kg/26lbs), supposedly great quality for the price.
Cons: Still an "off-brand", so I'm not 100% about it, not much less than a Vinten, current rig might be too light!

Vinten Vision Blue
(£610)
http://www.proav.co.uk/Vinten-Vision-Blue-Tripod-System/p29084.aspx
Pros: A real Vinten that is supposed to deliver anything one could expect from that. Pretty cheap too!
Cons: Smallest weight range at 2kgs to 5kgs (4lbs to 10lbs) and don't know if it could handle a larger camera and screws to adjust the tripod!

And then there's Sachtler. They have some kits over at Creativevideo with the ENG 75/2 D legs, which I saw and they didn't impress me. I need some legs that are a bit sturdier. So I thought, why do I need their legs? I could get a nice head and then pick up a decent set of legs (E-Image or Libec) over at ProAV anyway (suggestions here are welcome)!

Sachtler CineDSLR
(£506 for the head)
http://www.creativevideo.co.uk/index.php?t=product/sachtler_cine_dslr_head
Pros: Designed for my needs, could balance up to 9.7 kgs (20lbs!), so it should work! Oh and it's a Sachtler.
Cons: Ehm... Legs might be worse? Still haven't seen it with a bigger camera.

Sachtler FSB6
(£589 for the head)
http://www.creativevideo.co.uk/index.php?t=product/sachtler_0407
Pros: It's a Sachtler. Alternative to the CineDSLR.
Cons: Don't know if it's better or worse than the CineDSLR. The most expensive of the bunch.

Other suggestions are welcome!]]>
