GH4 laptop Requirements?

Let me start this off with saying that I know a desktop is a better option for this. However, I absolutely must have a laptop to do my editing on the road while it is happening. I have a matter of hours to edit this footage and not days, weeks, or months.

Also I am a PC guy. I understand that some people use Macs. That just isn’t for me. I want a fast PC laptop that can handle editing the GH4 4K video for less than $2000.

I definitely need to upgrade my laptop before my GH4 gets here. However, I am not sure what specs will help me and what will just cost me more money and not really give me any benefit.

Obviously a 4K screen would be ideal to match the footage. However, is that really necessary? With a 15-19 inch screen is that extra resolution going to matter at all? How much are the 4K laptops going to be? Is 1920x1080 going to look about the same as 4K on this size screen? Do any of you have a 4K laptop already?

What Grpahics processor? I have always been an ATI person before. However, Nvidia makes great video cards as well. What is the minimum ATI and Nvidia card that will work for editing 4k footage? Is the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 770M enough?

Processor. It is confusing about what processor are fast and what processors are just pretending to be fast. My understanding is that I7 doesn’t always mean what you think it means. So what processor should I be looking for? Is the i7-4700MQ the best processor to get right now?

Operating system. I really hate Windows 8. I have a laptop with it and I hate it. I really don’t want to get another one with Windows 8. Will Windows 7 hold me back in any way? I have a lot of astrophotography programs that I also run and those won’t work properly under Windows 8.

Ram. I know the more you have the better. However, will you see a difference between 16 Gigs and 32 Gigs? There is usually a significant price difference between those. Is 16GB PC3-12800 DDR3L SDRAM enough?

Hard Drive. I am using USB 3.0 external drives right now. I need a lot more than 250 or even 500 GB so solid state is not really an option for me. Is solid state that much faster than USB 3.0?

Here is one laptop I am looking at. It is an Alienware 17.3" Laptop - 16GB Memory with the components I listed above. Are there better options out there for less than $1850?

Copying mac hard drives with Windows PC

I have a unique situation. I will be copying the contents of one mac-formatted hard drive onto another empty mac formatted hard drive. But at the location I'll be doing this, I'll only have access to a Windows PC computer. Can I successfully plug both mac-formatted hard drives into the Windows PC and do a drag and drop copy of all the files from one mac-formatted hard drive to the empty mac-formatted hard drive?(The hard drive, with new files copied to it, will be used with a mac computer a few days later at separate location.)

I just bought this NAS Hard Drive, it works as a real server, you can back up and manage your file from wherever you are, you just need an internet connection.

Synology DS112+ has to be attached to a router at home, you can be even in Siberia taking pictures, you need space? just find the internet café in the closest Siberian little town and download safely all your data at home!!!

I'm selling it for £160 The item is new, just bought it!!

Hello, everyone. I think I need your help! Recently I have a problem with my WD external hard drive which is mysteriously displayed as “RAW”, not the previous “NTFS” on my computer. All the inner saved data also becomes inaccessible. I don’t know why. Do you know what’s going on with my drive? Is there any way for me to save my contained data and fix this RAW problem? Any idea can be appreciated! Thank you!

I have my MBP since 1 year now running with this configuration. No problems at all. But now suddenly my boot disc died. My local shop, who are repairing this, told me that this second hard drive is not a good thing to have in a MBP, because this second hard drive never goes into sleep mode and would damage the computer in long terms... Anybody heard about this, do you have experiences about this?

HDD issues and repair topic

Yesterday I have copied footage from cards on a hard drive, and while watching clips, i noticed some kind of glitches and drops appearing. I realized that it happens only with footage copied to one particular hard drive - 1-2 months old 2TB seagate ST2000DM001. When I copied files from same cards onto another hdd everything was ok. When I copied files (with drops) from seagate to another drive, and played them from the healthy drive - footage was damaged, video glitches like half frame drop, something like that, in movist it is like bright green blocks, in other players and Premiere they are just transparent half frame drops, similar to damaged beta tape, if anyone remembers that. Some files don't have glitches but when I copy them on the same drive but to another folder, they get damaged. This happens with MTS files and also after transcoding to Prores422 HQ. Luckily I always backup new jobs immediately, but I have some other projects on that drive.

Is that hdd dying? I didn't know that dying hdd can damage video files internally.

Atomos Ninja frying drive?

I am an owner of a Ninja that I bought used and as such didn't get any drives with it. I decided on the new Intel 330 series, as they were very good specs at a good price. Everything worked fine in the Ninja, until after a shoot where I left the drive sitting in the caddy on the computer over night (as it was 3 in the morning and we didn't have time to go). I returned the next morning and found everything transferred, phew. But but I had an error message saying that the drive had been unmounted, so I put it into my Ninja... And it didn't register it! I couldn't even format it, to the Ninja I had "nothing" in the drive. It seemed it was dead. I heard that on the 320 series you could get the Bad Context 13x error, where if the drive was unmounted any way that wasn't perfect, it would die on you. Could this be the same here? Because if that's the case, then I'm really scared, as getting unmounted improperly can happen when you pull it in and out of different devices. It seemed to be enough to just have it pulled without the computer unmounting it...

So I wonder, can I do anything to see if I can get the drive working again? Any software, tips? I should mention that I'm a Mac user... And if not, is this a problem with the 330 drives then? If so, any tips on ones that doesn't do this? Because I can not have this happen again on a shoot!

Formatting external 1TB Drive - NTFS or ExFAT?

I have just purchased an external 2.5" 1TB USB 3.0 hard drive. The drive will primarily be used to backup GH2 MTS files from SD cards while on location. It will be connected to a Win7 laptop but also needs to connect to a Win XP PC. (I have installed the Microsoft ExFAT driver)

I would also like to be able to connect the drive via USB to my Dune Smart D1 media player. Currently the Dune will not directly read my Sandisk 64g 95mb SD cards which I think maybe a Dune/ExFAT incompatibility issue.

I believe the GH2 formats SD cards to ExFAT.

After searching for a definitive answer I'm still not certain whether to format the hard drive to NTFS or ExFAT. Advice needed - TIA
