Rare Cine-Nikkor lenses on Nikon 1

For video work, i am using my GH series (from 1 to 4) without any hesitation as it delivers what I am looking for. For Photography work, I am using a Nikon D800 to please my clients, as they often print big from the pictures I had done for their website at first. They need high resolution and they always prefer the photographer they hired, handling a big camera. In many people mind, bigger is still more professional. For my personal photography enjoyment, I fall in love with a camera which had never been considered as exciting by usual reviewer: Nikon1 V1. I bought it new for 200 USD or so in 2013. My interest in this camera started after trying a collection of old C-mount lenses with some of them designed for 16mm film camera. Most of those lenses were too tight to cover the M43 sensor (huge vignetting going on) , but they perfectly match with the CX format of the Nikon1. For those who don't know: FX = 2 x M43, FX = 2.7 x CX (in term of cropping factor) Nikon1 V1 sensor (10 millions pixels Alpina) delivers "film like" colors, contrast, noise and sharpness. I know what I am speaking about as I started my career in professional Photography back to 1986.

C-mount to m43 adapters (2)

... what are your experiences with c-mount adapters? How do you adjust your c-mount lenses to have proper focus to infinity? I thought I just have to buy a precisely machined adapter and all those lenses will fit just how they should. Now I own about 5 different c-mount adapters (latest is the METABONES adapter) and non of them seam to match the required flange back. Do you have to loosen all those tiny screws on the lens and adjust it to your camera/adapter??

The FPS1000 looks promising, at least the Gold and Platinum models. There are 8 days left of the Kickstarter. The 290fps 720p sprinkler video from the "Gold" model looks nice. The 200 fps 1080p video from the "Platinum" model looks like something may have gone wrong when uploading to the web. There is a weird banding thing going on in the footage. I'm personally waiting for better 1080p footage before I buy. Anyway many stretch goal were reached and there is now going to be an internal battery, better case, 3D option, and a high speed expansion port for a future high speed media module or to connect to a PC for longer takes.

Which CCTV lens for wide angle fisheye use ?

Hello everyone,

I've recently started to get interested in C mount (CCTV) lens, for they are fast, wide, and cheap. So I wondered, is there any CCTV lens that I could use as a Fisheye (and get the same effect as the Panasonic 8mm f3.5, but faster) ? Here's a few lens I've found looking on the internet :

Rainbow 3.5mm 1.6
Tamron 4-12mm 1.2
Pentax 6mm 1.2 (+ wide conversion lens x0.45)

Wanted effect :

The GH2 exact m4/3 sensor crop is x1.86.

So I would like to get the same widness as the Panasonic 8mm or any 8mm Fisheye (Samyang, Peleng, Rokinon...) :

Panasonic 8mm : 8 x 1.86 = 14.88mm equivalent (no need for ETC mode)

Rainbow 3.5mm : 3.5 x 1.86 = 6.51 -> 6.51 x 2 = 13mm equivalent

Pentax 6mm : 6 x 1.86 = 11.16 -> 11.6 x 2 = 23.2mm equivalent -> 23.2 x 0.45 = 10.44mm equivalent

x 1.86 : GH2 Sensor Crop

x 2 : ETC tele conversion mode crop (to cover vignetting)

x 0.45 : Wide convversion lens

Does that mean we could use any CCTV c mount lens instead of the Panasonic lens to get the wide fisheye effect ?

C mount lens (1/2") work well on the GH2, but I heard that the CS mount lens (1/3") would still have really heavy vignetting because even with the ETC mode it would not cover entirely the GH2 sensor. Is that true ?

C-Mount Speed Booster?

Does anyone know of a way to get a Speed Boosted image from a C-Mount camera? I'd rather use one official Metabones Speed Booster with a second adapter than having it all in one generic Speed Booster adapter, but I'll take all idea's. Metabones currently makes MFT, NEX/E-Mount, and Fuji X Speed Boosters, so ideally I'm looking for one of those mounts to C-Mount. I'm having trouble finding such an adapter. Thanks.

Selling my Schneider Variogon 18-90mm/f2, a c-mount zoom with full coverage of 1"/S16, in very good used state: clean glass, intact coating, perfectly working focus and aperture rings. Works very well on the Blackmagic Pocket. With 800g, it's lightweight enough to be used on the camera without additional lens support. Optically, it's better than for example Canon's V6/V7 zooms.

Since the Pocket has been available, this lens is very sought-after, and there are even Ebay offers for $1000. So it wasn't easy for me to figure out its fair and realistic market value.

This movie has been shoot a week-end mid october in Bordeaux, and first week-end of november in the countryside. I'm glad to have now I think the perfect anamorphic set combination for my baby Hypergonar anamorphic lens. I bought few weeks ago a used Qioptiq C-mount lens, usually used in industry. This lens is very sharp, even at it's fastest aperture (f1.6) and this wide aperture is still usable with the anamorphic on it ! Some of the shot of the movie had been taken at f1.6.

It was not possible to screw directly the anamorphic lens on the Qioptiq prime lens because the front barrel is turning when you focusing. So I ordered a special machined flat step up ring to attach the two lens. I've unscrewed the ring on the Qioptiq that is maintening the glass, and replace with the special machined flat ring. Then I screwed on it the original small Berthiot clamp that can align the anamorphic lens. Then I put the baby Berthiot hypergonar in it. The combination suits perfectly ! The weight of this anamorphic combo is quite light. The Hypergonar weight is 57 grams, the clamp maybe 20 grams, the Qioptiq is 210 gram, then the two filters (diopter + variable ND) and step up rings maybe 150 grams. So the total is around only 400 grams ! And finally using the OM-D with it's 5 axis stabilization system with an anamorphic combo is very useful !

This movie has been shoot during thursday 18th of october 2013, from the morning to the end of the afternoon, bringing my daughter at school, then filming with my students at university, then taking my daughter from her school.

I've found this incredible C-mount lens on Ebay for 150€. It's a LINOS MeVis-C 35mm 1.6 C-mount lens made by Qioptiq.

It's an industrial lens, usualy sold for 1090$ , http://pstechnik.de/en/optics-c-mount.php .

The 35mm is designed for 1'' sensor. It has been used in some of the shots of Slumdog Millionaire. I'm looking for a solution to use it with my anamorphic lens my baby Hypergonar. I did some fast test and it's very promising !!!!!

Hi everybody. I'm a new GH-2 owner just starting to get my feet wet. Which means I'll probably say or write something stupid pretty frequently. Looking to take advantage of some bits of glass I have laying about; I'm itching to play with my trusty Switar 1.6 10mm on the GH-2. Are there any warnings / suggestions you can offer regarding my choice of adapter? I've already sent one back (cheap e-bay junk) that was poorly machined and would not fully rotate so it would lock, so the camera complained... Thanks in advance! Dave

ETC Mode Discussion

I own only a GH1 (no etc mode) but I'm planning to buy a GF2, which has only x3.2 ETC mode (while GH2 has more options on ETC). I like very much old fast lenses like c-mount tamron 4-12 zooms, pentax 6-41, it would be great to use them (they're very cheap, you know) on GF2, however most of the demos I've found on the net are GH2-specific,and I don't know what are ETC drawbacks. A x3.2 could be too "extreme" in terms of video quality? It would be a good idea to use a c-mount 4-12 tamron f 1.0 on a GF2 x3.2 ETc (24-72mm!!) or video quality would be worse than a common kit lens panasonic 14-42 f3.5?

Unfortunately, I heard from the sellers that they have unchangeable lenses.

As I understood the zoom distance of this lenses can be changed from a button on the camera body, so probably it would be difficult to take off the lens from the cam... One of the sellers told me the lens has electric control of the zoom and the aperture is changed also from the camera.

I don't know anything about this, but these zoom lenses are pretty fast and VERY cheap (Revue Reflex Zoom f: 1.7 \ F: 8-40 mm and Canon 9.5 - 47.5mm f/1.8 and especially Schneider Macro-Variogon 1,4 / 7 - 80 mm from the Brown cameras) .

I think they could be useful for GH2/3 with a ETC mode, so I wondered if someone already achieved some adaptation of this lens type to micro 4/3?

CCTV/C-Mount lenses for G series (smaller sensor)

I have seen lots of topics dealing with cheapy (and fast) cctv lens, c-mount lenses on Panasonic GH1/2. Vignetting is a serious issue on these lenses, in particular for wide angles; many videomakers on GHx use ETC; However, most of the problems of vignetting seems to be caused by the non-standard size (16/9 crop etc) of GHx-sensor, which is a little wider than standar M4/3; GF2/3 cameras, on the contrary, have standard M4/3 sensor, so these cameras shoud have less vignetting issue... What's your experience with GF1/2 and C-mount?

for example, here you can read an article about wide and fast c-mount lenses..they work better on GF series!

I have a couple Pentax Cosmicar 12.5mm f1.4 C-mount lenses. They have been modified to fit on a C-mount to M4/3 adapter (the barrel needs some filing to fit the adapter, done on a lathe). They have been shimmed for proper infinity focus and adjusted so the aperture/focus markings are upright.

There is vignetting. I will upload some test shots soon.

Proposition about variable ETC mode

I'm here to make the case again to Vitaliy to figure out how to control the GH2's cropping and downscaling features, and allow us to change them through ptool. (If it's not obvious, this post concerns video, not stills.)

There's a universe of old C-mount lenses out there, in 1/3, 1/2, 2/3, 1 inch, and 16mm, each of which makes a different sized image circle. To use each of these lenses to their fullest, you want your camera's sensor to be slightly smaller than that image circle. With the GH2 we have a camera with the capability to have any sensor size you want, up to 4/3. The "universal-format camera" is in our hands, we just need some awesome hardware hacker to unlock it!

The "proof" that the GH2 is capable of this is found in the facts that 1) the GH2 is currently able (has the processing power) to take the entire 4/3-inch, 4976x2800, 16:9 portion of the sensor, and downscale that to 1920x1080 or 1280x720 (did I see that some of you had got the GH2 to use other sizes?); and 2) the GH2 is also capable of using only part of the frame, with no downsampling (as demonstrated in ETC mode). So it's not much of a stretch to believe that the GH2 is capable of taking any 16:9 subset of the sensor's pixels AND downscaling that to any 16:9 pixel size! (Indeed, by de-centering the crop region, you could correct for the inevitable misalignment between lens and sensor.)

So the challenge to you, Vitaliy, is to figure out how to choose that subset of pixels and add that item to ptool. Then, for example, I can take the 4160x2340 subset of the GH2 sensor's 4976x2800 pixels* that my cheap, fast, good 1-inch format C-mount lens can cover, and get great video. Right now, the only way to use this lens is to crop the video in post, which kills resolution (up-sampling, yecch) and wastes bandwidth encoding parts of the frame that are going to be cropped away.

(*yes I know it's more complicated than that, since it's a Bayer sensor, and the full sensor is more like 4976x3456, but you know what I mean.)

Further, as balazer pointed out in the posting "GH2 ETC-mode noise penalty" ( www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/comment/27293 ) the GH2's downsampling achieves 95% of theoretical efficiency at noise reduction by binning. So in my example above, where I'd be using about 70% of the area of the whole 16:9 portion of the sensor, my lens would have only a half-stop noise penalty compared to some way overpriced lens that could light the whole 4/3 frame--if such a lens even exists in this focal length. And spatial resolution (as in lines per picture height) would still be excellent, since the downscaling to 1920x1080 would still be a reduction to around 45% of the raw image. So the result would look far better than the existing ETC mode.

Suddenly, all that old C-mount glass, as ridiculously overpriced as some of it has become, will finally be worth using. No more dark corners. No more frustration with not knowing what image format a given C-mount lens that you find on eBay was designed for. If it's a C-mount lens, your GH2 would be able to use it to full advantage. As a side effect, this would encourage more reasonable pricing of Noktons, Noktors, and the rare cine lens that happens to fully cover 4/3.

Here's hoping that with Panasonic's release of the v1.1 firmware, this level of control will finally be possible! Perhaps this feature can be implemented as a modification to ETC mode, which would provide a handy way of turning this feature on and off through the camera's menu in the field.
