This is the camera we've all been dreaming about, and hoped one day to exist. The Aaton Delta Penelope. It'll be pricy (they haven't released a price yet), but perfection isn't cheap. I will own other cameras, and for the high end gigs, this will be my rental. I can't wait to get my hands on it.

I suggest to add photos, specs, etc
As I see they had videos about it two years ago, and on last NAB also
Yeah they've been talking about it for a long time and it looks like it'll finally happen.
Rumor is it'll be around the Alexa price range.
The mechanical shutter is the big thing for me. I believe the shutter characteristics of digital video is the farthest behind in the evolution/transition from film to video.
Yep, already tried to speak about it here : http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/1541
They first wanted to do a "dual mode" video camera (2 and 3 perfs 35mm film + digital 4K back), but they abandoned that idea.
I liked the discussion with that very french guy :
Updated specs : http://www.aaton.com/files/delta-p_april-2012b.pdf
That very french guy is Jean-Pierie Beauviala. A genuine legend of film making innovation. Whilst working at Eclair, he invented crystal sync. He then founded Aaton and they have long been innovators. Timecode on film, magnetic magazine drives, ergonomic camera design, electrostatic heated viewfinders....the list goes on and on. They were very much responsible for orginally pushing Super 16 as a genuine feature film origination format.
Penelope was made and they shipped 30 or so of these 2 perf and 3 perf field switchable 35mm cameras with the intent they would make a digital back or magazine for it, but they've now decided to just make a digital camera with a mechanical shutter and optical VF.

Thanks for interesting descriptions about this firm and Jean specifically.

I wasn't impressed by a movie claimed to be shot on a digital Penelope recently.
I'll have to look up my most recent Blu-Rays hired.
The specs sound good of course.
Jean-Pierre peaks of it in such a desultorily confident manner I'm already convinced the new Penelope will both deliver and be delivered
Another talk w/ Beauviala and some raw files of "zis litteule franche beauté" (a better french accent than mine : skilled guy!)
Delta development may be dead.. or alive, if they can sort out manufacturing problems with the sensors. Aaton looked to have gone bankrupt due to the problems with the Delta but now seem to have new owners. A digital minima in the pipelines. http://nofilmschool.com/2013/05/aaton-new-owners-documentary-style-digital-camera/
